What’s the real value of gold coins?

When it comes to the value of gold coins, there are a few different ways of looking at things.

First, the value of the gold itself.

Let’s say you buy a one ounce gold coin. The price you’ll pay to take delivery of that gold coin is going to be higher than the spot price of one ounce of gold.

Why? Because there is a cost associated with the manufacture of the gold coin, and a premium to be paid for having your gold in the form of a coin. Plus there is the bullion dealer’s commission, and delivery and insurance costs if you have the coin shipped to your home.

That’s why some people buy a one ounce bar instead of a one ounce coin. What you pay is closer to the real value of the gold. (You still have to pay commissions and shipping and insurance costs, but the manufacturing cost is less.)

In other words, you get more gold for your dollar if you buy gold bars.

Either way, when it comes to selling, the value of gold coins, or bars, will be very close to the spot price of gold at the time you decide to sell.

That said, the value of gold coins isn’t just about the spot price of the gold. There is a less tangible value in holding recognized gold coins, like the American Gold Eagle or Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

These coins, and others, are recognized around the world. Dealers will recognize and accept these coins at a glance. It’s like owning the ultimate global currency.

Gold coins also have an aesthetic value. A Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is a lot more attractive to own and handle than a one-ounce gold bar.

Finally, the value of gold coins is also associated with the sense of security that owning gold gives you.

As a safe haven investment, gold coins give you peace of mind, particularly during turbulent economic times. And that, as they say, is priceless.
